From the FAFO Files

At approximately 3:15 p.m. in the Lake Village area of the park, a man was gored by a bison after he approached it too closely. [More]

Stupid ought to hurt.

Or as the author of Mauled shared, never try to feed bears by attracting them with a marshmallow in your mouth:

  1. It’s the start of the season here in NW Wyoming. We call them “tourons”, a portmanteau of “tourist” and moron.

My wife and I were in Yellowstone a couple of years ago and watched 3 or 4 tourons literally CHASE a pair of grizzlies up a hillside off the road to try to get a better picture. I kept muttering to her, “Geez, I hope the bears turn around and slap those idiots upside the head couple of times. They might learn something if they lived through it. C’mon, bears.” No such luck.

I’ve been within 20 feet of a bull bison, but I was standing in the bed of the pickup, and the buffalo had walked right up to us after we had parked on the other side of an open field about 100 yards away. I took pictures of him walking towards us, and though you couldn’t see it at the time (their eyes are very dark) he was looking directly at us as he moved, and then just kept on ambling down the shoulder of the road away from us.

You’ve got to be mentally deficient to get close to a bull buff on foot. They can move a LOT faster than they look, and they can get mean. But it seems like every year somebody learns those lessons the hard way.
