F them! They were all slave owners anyway!
This is hardly an outrageous result.
The matter under discussion was a civil agreement — that is, a contract. One party agreed to conform to Islamic norms (none of which were illegal under actual law) or pay damages. That the norms were religious isn’t even a factor. It’s no different from a contract with a caterer agreeing that they would deliver only kosher food to a Jewish wedding, or pay a monetary penalty.
