1. The magnet driving immigration, American jobs, was to be turned off by what eventually became “E-Verify.” But where the “grand compromise” stated it was to be mandatory, it was enacted as a voluntary program. That magnet never was turned off.
2. To take another cut out of the problem, the compromise agreed that the border, which in some places wasn’t even marked, much less fenced, would be hardened with personnel barriers. This was watered down and the money spent on mere surveillance so Border Patrol could more easily monitor the problem while not being any more able to stop it. So while they spent money on the border, they never hardened it, and it not only remains unsecured, today its more wide open than it ever was.
3. As for the crown jewel of the compromise, the supposedly one time amnesty for illegals currently in the country, anyone not living under a rock has seen the demands for another bite at the apple, and probably another after that when, not if, it comes to pass.
So…….. The Simpson- Mazzoli Act of 1986: three lies in one package. Reminds me of that old saying “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shamre on me!”
