There used to be people you could truly call a “moderate Democrat.” There used to be a healthy bit of overlap between the right most Democrats and the left most Republicans. Those were the “moderates” in their respective parties. For the most part they no longer exist. They no longer exist because they were driven out, not just by the radicalization of their respective political party, but more importantly, by the radicalization of the people who actually participate in the primary election process.
So I’d place “moderate Democrat” and “liberal Republican” on a list of favorite oxymorons along with “cherry tart”, “jumbo shrimp”, and “tactical nuclear weapon.”
