  1. I’d bet the vending machine id feature records a time stamped photo, record of items bought, record of payment mode, and full details of the id provided. Since it will verify your eligibility it must be routed through some official database or other.
Note that online purchases include all identifiable features of your transaction except, for now, a photo. And that box delivered to your door is clearly labelled with a telltale commodity code.
Buying at a retail store will also include a time stamped photo, mode of payment, and items bought. Using cash will not eliminate the identifying elements of every purchase.
Buying at a gun show? Venues are generally covered by surveillance cams and sprinkled with local, state, and fed cops posing as customers.
Even the guy down the street is not guaranteed to be safe. Not a pretty picture at all. Is it correct that in some places (NY?) you may not purchase ammo for a caliber you don’t show a gun for?
Good luck to all as the noose(s) tighten.

  2. I remember buying .22 LR and 20 ga ammo at 7-11 on the way to rabbit hunt after getting out of junior high for the day. Cash transaction with no ID required.

Seems like we’re in a different country sometimes.
