What could be the cause?
Listeria monocytogenes is a dangerous bacteria, causing roughly 172 deaths annually in the US, frequently linked to contamination from environmental sources, animal feces, and potentially, human fecal contamination due to poor hygiene in agricultural or food-processing environments. It is notoriously difficult to eliminate once established, thriving in moist, nutrient-rich environments like soil and improperly handled farm produce.
Oregon’s agriculture industry heavily relies on thousands of immigrant workers, including many who are undocumented, to function… The USDA estimates that half of all hired crop farm workers in the U.S. are undocumented. Immigrants in Oregon hold about $14 billion in spending power and contribute more than $5 billion in taxes, highlighting their economic significance to the state.
