Underhanded? Yes!
Dirty trick? Yes!
Illegal? Not usually, and sometimes the rules of when party affiliation changes most be frozen before an election are tinkered with as well. The ultimate is changing partizan primaries to open primaries and “helping” your opponent to elect the candidate you’d rather face in the general.
Politics is a full contact sport and it would be a big mistake to expect an opponent who doesn’t believe in rules from the “get go” to play fairly.
