  1. Congress has a habit, and I suggest a very bad if not outright dangerous habit, of attaching almost religious qualities to the concept of “bipartisan grand compromise.”

Bringing up the subject of what is now called E-Verify throws one of the most egregious examples in recent history on to the table for closer examination.

The last time the Left drug us around the block on the subject of our “broken immigration system” was during the mid 1980s and the result was one of one of these bipartisan grand compromises, The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, AKA Simpson-Mazzoli. The left wanted then, as now, to bring an untold number of “undocumented immigrants” out of the shadows and through the magic of amnesty convert them into Democrat voters with the stroke of the President’s pen. In order to achieve that goal, they agreed with the Chamber of Commerce Republicans to one of these compromises. They agreed that the jobs magnet would be turned off through the creation of a system not unlike NICS universal background checks, where every person working in the USA would fill out an I9 and have that (prospective) employee’s work eligibility verified with a FedGov database. They further agreed to border hardening measures that would turn away those who were not deterred by the reduction of job opportunities in El Norte. They also agreed that due to the reduction of illegal immigration from the two steps above, any future need for an amnesty would disappear, and a one time, never to be repeated, amnesty would clear up the problems of those currently here illegally.

We now know that they all had their fingers crossed behind their backs. The border enhancements were never funded, E-Verify was not made mandatory, and the Left is back once again for another amnesty.
