  1. My in-laws wanted to build a wall across their back yard in order to secure their new pool per code.

But in the process they determined that a utility pole was on their property, outside of the utility easement, and actually in the footprint of the proposed pool. They called both FPL, the electrical provider, and Southern Bell, the telephone provider. They tend to use each other’s poles when ever possible to cut costs and avoid duplication. Both denied ownership of the pole and responsibility for correcting the problem. As it happens, the ownership of utility poles is usually branded into the wood, or on a nailed on metal plate. As it also happens, my mother in-law was working to get Paula Hawkins, then the Florida PSC chairwoman, elected to the US Senate. I suggested she mail a picture of the pole’s brand to Ms Hawkins and “let ‘er rip.”

Within days an irate and embarrassed FPL supervisor was on her from porch asking “Why did you do that to us?”

And here’s the punch line. My mother in-law responded “I didn’t do anything to you. You did it to yourselves.”

Lets all wish the chastened (and hopefully wiser) Mr. Clooney a nice day!
