  1. His method of departure inconvenienced (fortunately only inconvenienced) a couple of hundred airline customers and likely requires a costly overhaul of that blender…err, engine.

    1. In the Navy they call it FOD (Foreign Object Damage).

      You’ll see a carrier’s whole flight deck crew line up shoulder to shoulder, rail to rail (except carriers don’t really have rails) and walk the deck from bow to stern looking for loose stuff that could be blown around by jet blast and sucked into a running engine and wreck the compressor stage. The result is called “blade salad.”

      During the Vietnam War, aboard the four carriers lined up on Yankee Station, deliberately FOD-ding an engine became the Navy equivalent of fragging onshore.
