Behold, a Marvel in the Darkness*

Democrat scaring constituents to vote for gun control.

I witnessed a miracle this afternoon. To quote my 19-month-old granddaughter, “Wow.”

You may be able to convince yourself that such a perfect alignment of relative sizes and distances is the product of random chance rather than design and order, but the odds of that are so improbable as to be indistinguishable from magical thinking.

At the height of totality, there was a bright red dot @ 195° which I understand could have been either a solar prominence or light making its way through a lunar surface irregularity.

What a show of a lifetime.

We didn’t get totality here in my neck of the woods but even without that it was still pretty cool. I remember well piling into several cars owned by older students and driving north from U of F campus to an I-95 rest area an hour away from town to see my first total eclipse.

I was once asked to give a group of Boy Scouts (remember Boy Scouts?) a chance to look at stuff through a telescope I used to own. They were learning “Celestial Navigation” for some reason and I was telling them stuff like “geographic position”, “plane of the ecliptic” and “ephemeris” and it was all received with a bunch of blank stares. Then I cheated.

I had prepared a piece of poster board with the orbits of the inner planets, their positions and the sun’s as seen from earth that night. Still blank stares. Then I held the poster board up to align with the plane of the ecliptic with my eye at the earth’s position on the edge of the board and their eyes got really big. They saw it. And for that moment they all felt like bugs on the sidewalk compared to what they were looking at as if for the first time.

Things like an eclipse will do that to you.
