There is a classic 1964 single frame photograph by Harold E. Edgerton of a bullet shortly after it exits an apple. A 1984 dye transfer print of the photograph titled “Bullet Through Apple” is held by the Smithsonian Art Museum.
The first firearm I ever shot was in Doc Edgerton’s lab, taking photos of cards shot on edge. I was a fine photographer but a terrible shot. And I was a minor in Massachusetts, unsupervised in the lab with a rifle — can you even believe that was possible there?
The more you look, the worse it gets…
On a recent move, I separated out primers, smokeless powder, and loaded ammo for transport in my personal truck. I mean, shipping companies charge a “hazmat fee” for a reason, right?
Imagine my surprise when the movers refused to put thousands of empty fired brass cartridge cases on their truck because they were “bullets” while happily loading up several thousands of actual bullets without a word being said.
Sometimes I feel like the Kalahari resident in “The Gods Must be Crazy.”
