The empowered worker paradigm failed with General Motors’ experiment with Saturn. It failed with IBM’s small system unit in Boca Raton that created the various PC lines that changed the world. And it failed yet again with what used to be called the Bell System’s “Work Itself” programs.
And in all three of those cases it was not a failure of the concept. It wasn’t a failure of the workers to adapt. The failure was in the middle and upper management ranks when they couldn’t adapt to a loss of control.
The only workers who will enjoy the fruits of AI are the ones who use the opportunity to strike out on their own and become self motivated, self managed, entreprenures.
