When working towards a Bachelor’s degree part time nights, I needed only one more course. Any course would suffice. I chose ECON 101 to get some sense of economic literacy. The instructor introduced himself at the first meeting for class. He had been a U.S. Postal worker, a union member -very pro-union, very leftist and proud of it. He attended college nights while working at the Post Office during the day, achieving a Bachelor degree in Economics, then a Master and PhD. Along the way, his educational experience had demonstrated to him how unworkable his initial beliefs were. He learned that Socialism and Communism, while appealing to many, arise in dysfunctional societies that lead to even more dysfunctional societies. Pure Capitalism can be ugly, but the complete abscence of Capitalism is uglier.
