  1. Some younger readers might not catch the reference “Song of the South.”

The movie by that name is an Oscar winning part live action part animated masterpiece by Walt Disney. It was based on a book that attempted to capture folktales that circulated among enslaved blacks in pre-civil war times before those tales disappeared forever. It was later a target of criticism claiming it didn’t accurately portray the lives of slaves in the pre Civil War South.

The fact that the movie portrays Reconstruction Era life of freedmen who chose to remain on their former masters’ plantation didn’t phase the critics one bit.

Disney pulled the movie. You can still find it, just don’t go looking for it at your local Disney store.
