Up in Smoke

The Westcliffe Independence Day Parade/Second Amendment March had to be canceled. Received via email:

Good afternoon David, We greatly appreciate you letting your readers know about our 2A March that was planned for Saturday. However, the 4th of July Parade has been canceled because of the Aspen Acres Fire that is burning in Custer and Pueblo Counties and has grown to more than 50,000 acres. Several towns (Beulah, Rye, Wetmore) have been evacuated along with dozens of neighborhoods, with many homes and other structures already lost. I would ask for prayers for all of the first responders and everyone being affected by this and all the fires in the region, as well as our great country during these times when so many things are just upside down. Thank you and God bless you.

That’s the spirit that would have marched. That’s the spirit that confirms who is on the right side of things.

George Gramlich was known by the company he kept, and he was a pretty good judge of character.

The March Goes On

Regulars here and at Sipsey Street Irregulars have been following the march for some time, and will also recall George Gramlich and the Sangre de Cristo Sentinel.

He would have never asked for a tribute, which makes it all the more appropriate and meaningful. I hope he and Mike will be watching the parade together.

Fond Farewell

Due to serious, personal health issues, we must shut the Sangre de Cristo Sentinel. This will be our last publication. [More]

This is very sad news that came as a shock. I’ve been telling WarOnGuns readers about this unique venture in truthful local journalism for years, first on the original blog and then here.

Per editor, publisher, and driving force George Gramlich, who set the example and created a template others can follow:

All it takes is effort, dedication and love of country and our Constitution. Think local patriots. Local is doable. Get off the internet and get your neighbors and friends in gear. Engage. Take the offensive. This should serve as an example for patriots everywhere. Start your local efforts now. There is no shame in trying and losing, but there is shame in not trying.

I got an email from George a few days back while on vacation telling me he was hospitalized and would be entering hospice. I called him yesterday and let him know what an inspiration he has been to me.

It’s not the first time I’ve felt compelled to do that, and all you can do is share prayers, honest feelings, respect, and love, and hope that in some small way that brings a measure of comfort. And acknowledge that we’ll all be looking at our own last chapter some day.

Indicative of his spirit and character, our conversation was warm and forward-looking. George told me the people who worked there know how to keep The Sentinel operational and what they need is a new general. While no one can take his place as a unique human being, functions are fillable by those with the right skills and mindsets. I’ll reaching out and seeing what encouragement I can offer from afar, and in the meantime, keeping brother George in my prayers.

And, of course, all a classy leftist ankle-biter can do is celebrate.

He’s won nothing. And learned even less.
