Thank God Almighty, We’re Free at Last!

This NSSF-supported law protects the privacy and sensitive financial information of people purchasing firearms and ammunition in Iowa. [More]

I sure am seeing a lot of breathless hyperbole over blocking Merchant Category Codes

So they’re switching from NICS to BIDS…?

And maybe change that to “law-abiding people.” Criminals already have those advantages.

  1. Texas passed something similar (if memory is working).
At that time I asked the author how it would be enforced.
Still waiting for that answer, or even acknowledgment that I’d asked the question.
    C’est la vie

  2. These specific merchant codes are new. As more gun buyers become aware of them I suspect you will see credit card usage for firearms related transactions drop. How far they drop and how close to zero they go remains to be seen. If the credit card folks are OK with kissing those transaction fees “Goodbye!” its no skin off of my nose.

For the rest of us, Ca$h is still king. Be prepared and take what you expect to spend with you to a show. If you run short but see something you absolutely have to have, you’re probably gonna be walking distance from an ATM. I haven’t yet seen anyone at a show taking bitcoin (yet), but I’m sure (dark web?) bitcoin transactions at gun shows will be “a thing” at some point in the future.
