Some of you trying to get into WarOnGuns this morning may have gotten back a “429 Too many requests” error message.
What’s happening is this site is on a shared server, and when the host gets more traffic than it can handle, either because there are too many users or bots are overwhelming it, everyone is frozen out, even me.
The solution is to pay for a private server, something I’m contemplating but have mixed feeling about, because this site is not a revenue generator and I have to decide if the number of readers I get makes it worth the money to me. Based on the stats, I’m torn.
Per my longstanding policy, when I ask readers to make donations for something it is never for me, and that’s not going to change. I am looking at what my options are, including with another host, but for the time being all I can suggest is if you really want to get in and can’t, please wait and try again. If that’s too much of an ask with the information I try to provide and the work required to present it in a unique way, then that kind of answers the question.
Sorry. That’s the best I got at this time.
The other big reason for needing a private server is when your hosting provider occasionally hands out accounts on your shared server to spammers, whose abuse gets your (shared) outgoing mail server added to global blacklists for spamming, and then YOU can’t send any mail to anybody for several weeks. If you’re not using your server for mail traffic, this is less of a factor, but that one thing is what tipped me over the edge.
Yeah, I limit mail to Hotmail, so it’s not a factor for me.

Regardless, your posted refund policy is more than fair.
