So he says. But cops are allowed to lie. But say the lead investigator was a “good” one- you have no way of knowing that or if he’s a typical “Only One” trying to find something to hang you with. A couple days in jail is nothing compared to what you could get railroaded into. And don’t even try and pull “a few bad apples” around here.
The best advice is still “Don’t talk to the police.” But do tell your attorney EVERYTHING.
Sounds like this kid had a crappy one, because if the DGU really was that cut and dried, a competent lawyer would have gotten his client absolved without gambling with risks…

Just like the favoritism and political palm greasing hastened the switch from no carry to may issue to shall issue to “constitutional carry”, bad cops and bad prosecutors paved the way for the various “castle doctrine” and “stand your ground laws” now spreading around the country.
The way Weyerhaeuser provoked the spread of “take your gun to work” laws is a whole ‘nother but similar topic.

And as for the whining about these changes in law and law enforcement making it more difficult for LEOs, prosecutors, and judges to do their jobs, they should have thought about that before they made it a habit of f*cking around with the “common folk.”
