We’re the Only Ones Vigilantist Enough

Dad charged with killing his 14-year-old daughter’s rapist now running for sheriff: ‘It’s about restoring trust’ [More]

While I can sympathize:

A. He’s a prohibited person until he can get charges dismissed and would be a sheriff who can’t have a gun and is likely to go to prison.

and

B. I have to put my trust in respecting due process, not in giving enforcement powers to a man who has already proven he would deny it.

  1. As a father of 2 girls, and a grandfather of 7 grand daughters, and great grandfather of 7 great grand daughters, I identify with the man. Until you’ve been failed by the courts, and the law , the frustration, and anger you feel at the thought that some low life scumbag would harm a innocent child, especially yours, you have no idea.
    I commend the man.

    1. You’ve read a media blurb with subjective claims and no way of separating truth from allegations. What evidence submitted under oath have you been presented and then evaluated and deliberated? The murdered man was out on bond, not convicted and then set free. He will now get a trial with his rights protected, something he denied the man he allegedly murdered.

  2. Technically he is not prohibited from possessing firearms if he is so far only accused or indicted of the crime. Arkansas apparently only prohibits someone who was convicted of a felony, not merely under indictment, from possessing firearms. A.C.A. Sec. 7-73-103. While he is under indictment, federal law only prohibits him from receiving firearms that he does not already possess. 18 U.S.C. sec. 922(n).
I agree with you. So far from such facts as are presented by the article, it would seem that this guy committed an extralegal act of vigilantism. Understandable though his actions may be, they must be investigated and, if warranted under the law, he should be prosecuted.

  3. This is whole thing’s dumb. So dumb it’s hard to believe. Running for sheriff while awaiting his trial… And being charged with murder of all things?
Charles Bronson’s ‘Death Wish’ films were great, but let’s face it, that’s fantasy. In real life, I wouldn’t want Bronson’s character as any kind of a lawman.
If I lived in that county, I’d vote for a dog over this proven idiot, and alleged murderer.
