For those innumerates who might come across this. The quoted passage above:
“… it might be good to mention that Bill Clinton’s assault weapons ban reduced mass shooting deaths by nearly half – but after George W Bush & Republicans let it expire, mass shooting deaths more than doubled …”
is true as far as it goes.
Prior to the passage of the 1994 AWB, the number of people shot dead by psychopaths using what came to be known as “assault weapons” was almost nothing compared to the total gun deaths in the USA. “Nearly half” of almost nothing is still almost nothing. Likewise, after Congress decided it wasn’t a good idea raise the ire of America’s gun owners, like they did in 1994, and declined to renew the 10 year experimental ban for so little gain, “… mass shooting deaths more than doubled …” Again, more than double nearly nothing is still nearly nothing.
Meanwhile, on Chicago’s South Side, urban youth continue to slaughter themselves and their neighbors in appalling wholesale batches using ordinary handguns. And nobody, not the Chicago chief of police, not the mayor, not Black Lives Matter, not Rev. Al Sharpton, not nobody, seems to give a sh!t.
Sorry, but not sorry. There’s no way we’re having a serious conversation about my AR15(s) and/or the size of the magazines I choose to put in it until the situation in Chicago changes.
