As the WaPo CEO told the newsroom staff:

In general, people use the media to get informed about what’s going on in the world, not to make a political statement. If you’re not attracting eyeballs for your advertisers, they will not pay you to run ads. There may be exceptions to this general economic principle, but, as many in the media have found, not enough to keep a newspaper or broadcasting station open.
