Democratic Pennsylvania state Rep. Dan Frankel introduced HB 2506 Monday, which would wipe out the state’s firearms preemption law, allowing local governments to enact their own restrictions on how gun owners could carry, transport, purchase or possess firearms. The legislation, introduced alongside HB 2505, also would repeal the state’s version of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, potentially opening gun manufacturers to lawsuits over the actions of criminals. Well… this is helpful.
Not the first time I’ve noticed.
Makes you wonder where that post-2020 influx of new gun owners went, or those “online-savvy” /k/ dwellers.
“… allowing local governments to enact their own restrictions on how gun owners could carry, transport, purchase or possess firearms.”
As always, “local gun owners” will fall into different groups.
1. The Bad Guys (and Girls), will continue to carry regardless of what the law is, as they always have. But then again, only a fool or a posturing legislator would suggest that criminals would obey a new law.
2. A middle group, those who try their best to live within society’s expectations, will evaluate new circumstances, and perhaps adopt a “catch me if you can” policy for the more onerous and/or ridiculous restrictions, such as carry being OK on one side of a street but not the other. Example? SW 57th Avenue, AKA “Red Road” forms the border between South Miami, FL and Coral Gables, FL. It also forms one edge of the University of Miami campus for part of that trip. In fact the border runs right down the center line of the street. North bound traffic will be in U of M or Coral Gables, depending, while southbound traffic remains in South Miami the entire way. Suppose Coral Gables, South Miami, and University of Miami all adopted different carry restrictions. Who would stop their car, secure their carry pistol in a locked box, drive a few blocks, stop again to retrieve and holster their firearm, and then continue their trip?
3. And then another group who would never dream of carrying a firearm, period.
As time went along, more and more folks would adopt a “f*ck it, I’m carrying” approach and just carry. Remember the 55 mph speed limits? What speed did you drive?
