“In the decade before the assault weapons ban, there were 16 mass shootings with a total of 125 victims. During the lifetime of the ban, 15 mass shootings took place with a total of 96 deaths.
The decade from 2004 to 1994—after the ban lapsed—saw 35 mass shootings and 296 deaths, while the period from September 2014 to June 2022 saw 41 mass shootings with a total of 429 deaths.”
Huh? Perhaps “The decade from 2004 to 1994” should instead be “The decade from 2004 to 2014”, but the lack of proofreading cannot fix the author’s confusion on coincidence and causality. There does not appear to be any significant difference between the decade before the ban and the decade of the ban other than the reduction in the number of deaths, which could be accounted for by advances in medical care. One wonders if the numbers from urban gang violence were subtracted what the totals would be.
