Being a bit of the Scots persuasion, I’d prefer a dearg (Anglicized as Dirk or dagger). Nowadays a Fairbairn-Sykes or V42 would do nicely. The originals are a bit pricey but many of the reproductions are of good quality.

Both of these would likely be as illegal as all getout in California, but I figure, if you’re going to carry an illegal weapon, might as well carry one that would do you some good in a fight.
