My understanding is that Florida’s statute bars the use of tax money in defense or settlement.
709.33 (3) (d)
“Except as required by applicable law, public funds may not be used to defend or reimburse the unlawful conduct of any person found to have knowingly and willfully violated this section.”

There’s still some wiggle room in the “knowingly and willfully” part. I guess we wait and see. I’m sure the courts will sort it out in 10 or 15 years or so.
