If You Don’t Ask, You Don’t Get

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners have petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court for review in Viramontes v. Cook County, SAF’s challenge to the Cook County, Ill., ban on so-called “assault weapons.” [More]

Here’s the brief.

I was happy to see that it did not neglect to include:

The text of the Second Amendment itself proclaims that one of its purposes was to preserve the “militia” and, to state the obvious, the militia did not exist solely to promote individual self-defense but rather was “useful in repelling invasions and suppressing insurrections,” “render[ed] large standing armies unnecessary,” and enabled the people to be “better able to resist tyranny”. Indeed, to the extent there is a historical tradition with respect to “military” arms, it is to afford them especially strong protection.

  1. Are we sure now’s the right time? Bringing up the Militia, it’s long past time 2A groups start arguing for what 2A actually means. But given the Supreme Courts recent 2A case history, if they do take the case, and that’s a big if, they’re as likely to rule the wrong way as they are the right way.

  2. And if they do rule the wrong way? Quoting Ms. Clinton, “What difference, at this point, does it make?”

Quoting a family acquaintance, who happens to be a rather strongly opinionated Leftist (and a gun owner), “Marijuana has been illegal since before I was born, yet I’ve been smoking it all my life. What makes your think I give a f*ck what gun laws Biden passes?”

If they repeal the Second Amendment tomorrow, or continue to ignore it as they have done since before we were born, what will you do differently?

Bottom line is this, it doesn’t really “bottom line” mattera whole bunch what laws they pass. This country is, and probably always will be, saturated with guns. They can’t confiscate that many guns. They do a damn poor job of enforcing the gun laws they do manage to pass. And we can just live our lives as we have been. Mostly.

But similar to what Lt. Orr told Yossarian, you might want to take up canoeing, “It’s good practice.”

    Google’s AI Overview said:

“The user’s query “Lt Orr its good practice” likely refers to
Lieutenant Orr from Joseph Heller’s novel Catch-22, and his repeated, seemingly clumsy plane crashes. This phrase is not an official book title, but instead is an ironic summation of his calculated actions.
In Catch-22, “good practice” was a deception
Early in the novel, Lieutenant Orr is perceived by others as a bumbling, half-witted pilot who is inexplicably lucky to survive repeated airplane crashes and ditchings at sea. However, his seemingly absurd actions are revealed to have a brilliant, strategic purpose later in the story.
The “good practice” he was performing involved:

Preparing for an escape: Each crash was a dress rehearsal, allowing him to master the skills needed for a prolonged survival at sea.
Throwing off suspicion: His reputation for clumsiness masked his true plan. His superiors assumed he was a foolish pilot with an uncanny knack for survival, rather than a clever airman planning a desertion.

    Orr’s escape and its impact
When Orr finally crashes his plane for the last time, everyone assumes he has perished at sea. The truth is that he has successfully used his “good practice” to reach Sweden, a neutral country, where he can live out the rest of the war in peace.
When protagonist Yossarian learns of Orr’s escape, it has a profound effect on him. Orr’s success proves that it is possible to defy the madness of war and escape the bureaucratic “catch-22″ that traps them all, energizing Yossarian to make his own break for freedom.”

Well, sh!t and throw me in it, the damn thing just might be halfway intelligent after all!
