  1. Am I wrong in thinking, at least part of the reason for the early release is so they don’t have to fight as hard to keep him here?

    I mean, if he were in custody, ICE would know exactly where he’s at and could just show up with a federal warrant at any time.

    But if he’s been released, he can disappear. California’s “Sanctuary State” provisions mean local authorities are prohibited from helping ICE locate him, and once he’s gone it becomes vastly more difficult for ICE to find and deport him.

    Thus, California gets to keep him here AND stick their thumb in ICE’s eye, and it cost them nothing. (Less than nothing, after factoring in the reduction in jail costs now that they’re not keeping him.)
