  1. In Catch-22, one of the funniest characters in literature, Orr, tells anyone who will listen that they should fly with him because “Its good practice.” He’s regarded as crazy because he manages to ditch his plane and end up paddling a life raft on every mission.

Only towards the last few pages do we read that Orr has yet again ditched his plane, but has managed to paddle his raft all the way from the Mediterranean Sea to internment in neutral Sweden and out of the war. He was practicing ditching, deploying, and paddling the whole war. And the practice paid off.

More than a funny story, like the skills Orr was trying to develop, you’re not going to buy a 3D printer, set it up, and print a working receiver on your first try. Trust, me. It just ain’t gonna happen. There’s a multi-step”toolchain” in the way that requires some practice to master before you achieve something that will actually work. But if, like Orr, you practice you will eventually get the results you seek. But you’d better not wait until they make it so that a 3D printed receiver is the only kind of receiver even remotely available to you.

Get a printer and get started. Like Orr said, “Its good practice.”
