Passing the Hat

Robert Kerr Elementary School in Durand, Michigan, encouraged students to wear hats of their choice for a “hat day” event two years ago. The daughter of Adam Stroub, who filed the lawsuit on her behalf, wore a black hat featuring a white star, an image of an AR-15, and the phrase “Come and Take It,” a set of symbols frequently used to support the right to bear arms. Michael Papanek, a behavioral specialist at the school, noticed the hat and alerted school principal Amy Leffel, who asked Papanek to contact her parents and ask them to bring another hat for her to wear. Did anyone come in one of these?

Schools have dress codes. I’d file this under “Pick your battles more wisely.”

The real issue is public schools.

  1. Freedom of speech and expression isn’t just for adults. 1A Rights extend to children. The parents should sue the schools for violating their child’s rights.

  2. The real question is, did anyone show up in a “greatest threat” MAGA hat? And if so, were they told to remove/replace it?

Did anyone show up in a Black Lives Matter hat and were they told to remove/replace it?

Echoing Dan’s comment above, no Constitutionally-protected right is just for adults. The school cannot “randomly” search any student’s backpack or locker for no reason, either; districts have been sued for that — and lost — under the 4th Amendment. They have to have reasonable articulable suspicions before they can search students’ belongings, just like police on the street.

Schools can have reasonable dress codes, but when the “Hat Day” event “encourages” the students to wear “hats of their choice”, singling her out because of the political message is a violation of her 1A rights.

  3. Perhaps these school control freaks need to have me nip round to tell them the wtory of how tht phrase figured in to the events of what is now called Patriot’s Day, 19th April 1775, when Catain John Parker’s men stood their ground at Lxington Commons and Jesse Adair’s hot headed unit ordered Parker’s men to “lay down your arms and disperse”. They refused, were fired upin, eight men perished that day. Adair’s men moved on toward Concord.
Parker’s men later performed what is jow referred to as “Parker’s REvenge”. After burying their dead proceeeded toward Concord, knowing Gage’s men had to be returning from their dirty work at concord… of which they had not yet learned. Parker’s surving militia took up a very strong position on the outside of a wide curve in “Battle Road” using large boulders as cover. They waited until they could hear the returning British units, stepped out from behind their rocks and gave a devasating volley. Their two lead officers went down, out of action for tthe rest of the day. Many kore were hit and also out of action. When you DO NOT let them”come and take it”, you can do things like this. If you allow them to “come and take it” then THEY hve them and yuodon’t. Figure the rest out.

The best thing this Dad cn do is to pull ALL his kds OUT of the government indoctrination and subjugation facilities known as “schools”. there are other options. Use them. No child of mine will EVER suffer the abuses of a government school.
