In the Aurora, CO movie theater shooting, the perp started firing an AR15 style rifle fitted with a higher capacity than usual magazine, reported to have been a 50 rounder. As has happened more than once in such cases, the gun jammed, and rather than clear the jam, the perp switched to a pump action 12 gauge shotgun, and when that ran dry, to a .40 cal semi-auto handgun.
But, unlike our movie theater perp, the left seems unable to switch when one of their ideas “jams.” If you go back and read the original VPC white paper that got the whole “assault weapon ban” rolling, the reason is clear.

They’re not interested in reducing “gun violence.”
They’re not interested in reducing criminal misuse of firearms.
Their goal(s) are as they have ever been:
1. To demonstrate to laggards in Congress that the NRA can be beaten.
2. To demonstrate that an entire class of firearms can be banned.
