ATF Claims Solvent Traps Were Always Unregistered Silencers… The ATF says that end caps by themselves are suppressors, even if an end cap is the only part an end-user has. The ATF clearly believes that a silencer does not have to be complete or functional before the owner crosses the line. Now, we have learned that ATF is sending Warning Notices (included below) to individuals who have purchased FRT’s on GunBroker from the user “rifleremedy2000,” but it’s not clear how ATF has acquired purchaser records or whether ATF itself is operating the account. It appears that ATF’s contact with these purchasers is part of “Operation Reticent Recall,” a name we learned from the top of an “Interview Questionnaire” that has been sent to some of our clients. Citing those has everything to do with scaring and prejudicing the readers.
Tracing things from the indictment to the guy’s website to his other website to his previous website, it looks like he was doing things because of his beliefs.
In any case, he evidently wasn’t doing things very cautiously if the goal was to get away with them. Here’s what Prince Law has to say about solvent traps.
If you were his customer, I’d be calling a lawyer and determining exposure and vulnerability about now.
