Who Are the Militia?

Democrats sue GOP county executive over armed volunteer unit they say amounts to an illegal militia [More]

So the ones who scream “It says well regulated!” freak when someone takes them at their word…?

In fact though, this sounds more like reserve “Only Ones,” and the Founders weren’t big on “select militias.”

  1. Yeah, that’s a select militia, a reserve police force if you will. The founders were not big on standing armies and select militia since those were instruments of central authority. Police, as we know them today did not exist and the security duties that they perform would have fallen on a standing army most of the time. I have no particular objection to this force. It would be more militia like if the State Guard (not ARNG) were organized on the county level and could be summoned by the elected sheriff and not just the governor.

  2. This organization of special deputies might just be comprised of special friends of the county exec who expect to exercise special privileges. Don’t know how to avoid the reality or the perception of such specialness.
In my perfect place the whole of the citizenry would comprise the constabulary.
