  2. There is a similar case from back in the old days involving something called DeCSS.

    CSS was an encryption scheme which prevented unauthorized copying of movies on DVD among other things. Long story short, you could watch a legally owned DVD on a Windows machine using an app but not on Linux or MAC because of legal complications. So some guys invented DeCSS to crack the code.

    They were prohibited from publishing their work by a court order, protested on First Amendment grounds etc. But while all of that was going on the code somehow got printed on T-Shirts, bumper stickers, and so forth.

    IIRC, the MPAA eventually gave up.
