I was in the direct cohort that first benefited from the 26th Amendment. It was a perfect tale of promises made and promises broken
Note that nothing in that amendment said anything ab0ut any “age of majority.” It just said you must be permitted to vote. But alcohol, contracts, movie ratings, juvie rules, they all marched in step, whether for legal or social reasons I’m not the one to ask.
Then they started paring those new rights right back down. No drinking after all. And no buying handguns, though a “real” adult could “give” you one.
Nope, the entire point of that amendment was that Democrats wanted more naive voters who were looking for DC sugar daddies — none of the rest was important, and some of it was actually dangerous to them so they carved it away.
This is nothing but more of the same. It was never about your freedom or your rights. Only your vote matters to them.
And only if they’re sure of it — ironically, despite the brand-new amendment, I was denied my right to vote on a trumped up pretense (“not self-supporting”) when I went to Cambridge City Hall to register — a pretense that would relegate the entire Democrat party to third-party status if they applied it today.
