And if you want an armed militia to disarm you probably should pick your words carefully. Unfortunately, the one good example we have isn’t clear on how the request was phrased.
Major John Pitcairn of HM Marines, senior officer at Lexington Green on April 19 1775 likely said one of the following:
“Disperse, ye rebels, disperse!”
-or-
“Lay down your arms, you damned rebels, and disperse!”
-or-
“Throw down your arms, ye villains, ye Rebels!”
But whatever the good Senator chooses to say, shooting one or more of the militiamen, while they were scrambling to get out of the way of Maj. Pitcairn’s numerically superior force, turned out to be a bad idea. One could start a revolution like that!
