So, “we’re” winning? If you listen to some “gun pundits,” this shows the tide is turning and gives gun owners cause to celebrate. Longtime friends may recall my ancestry is Transylvanian, and this reminds me of a small wooden box I keep on my fireplace mantle:
The story behind it is when we were still living in California my wife and I were friends with a Romanian priest, an interesting guy who used to be a member of the police under the communists and who had his own Road to Damaascus repentnance and conversion. We had him over for dinner one day and he told us he was going back to visit his mother and wanted to know if he could bring us back a souveneir.
First I told him “No,” because he didn’t make a lot of money, but then I reconsidered, and remembering the vampire legend asked him if he could bring back a bit of “native soil” from his mother’s garden. He brought it in that box and it wasn’t until he did that I realized I’d probably asked him to put himself at risk and violate U.S. agriculture law or some such by bringing it through customs.
I’ve given a pinch of native soil to many of my relatives to sprinkle in their gardens and incororate a bit of the Old Country. So far, we haven’t read of any Romanian bug infestations or crop blights as a result in the decades since.
And the thought strikes that by posting this, I may have just set myself up for a USDA SWAT raid. Isn’t that a thing to say about a government that’s whole purpose for existence is “to secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity”?
Maybe some indignant Demanding Mom will report me…
