An expectation of certain public caning upon conviction followed by 20 years busting rocks would put the crimp on a lot of impulses. Unfortunately, that would just net the stupid ones. Then again, maybe the government doesn’t want to admit how much it can crack and trace because of larger priorities.

As for real threats, less of this and more of this would go a long way toward making things right.

Former Mexican cartel kingpin Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada will spend the rest of his life in prison after pleading guilty Monday to U.S. drug trafficking charges and saying he was sorry for helping flood the U.S. with cocaine, heroin and other illicit substances and for fueling deadly violence in Mexico. Sounds like he doesn’t want to be found hanging by a chain and is signaling those who betrayed and supplanted him that, with a plea deal that “doesn’t obligate Zambada to cooperate with government investigators,” it’s better for everyone concerned not to try.
