True, they don’t have a First or a Second Amendment, but contrary to popular opinion, Australians have a right to free speech and a right to keep and bear arms. Everyone does.
What most don’t have is the will to keep violence monopolists from denying them.
Given that the film is also intensely political — telling the tale of a burned out revolutionary (DiCaprio) who endeavors to save his daughter (Chase Infiniti) from a white nationalist military officer (Sean Penn) — it’s perhaps surprising there hasn’t been more noise so far from those on the right. The film opens with a celebratory raid on an ICE facility to free detainees, and shows government agents coldly executing unarmed suspects and sending an undercover agent into a peaceful protest to throw a Molotov cocktail to justify increased force. They also need to get serious about the unlikelihood that any hearts and minds will be changed, and assess how many open minds will be in the mix and whether the cost/benefit potential makes it worth it.
And when not speaking, but just going around with their daily lives, head on a swivel situational awareness and response preparedness are musts.
The other thing that’s worried me for some time is conservative gatherings, including NRA events and the like, and the potential for some leftist lunatic to “give them a taste of their own medicine.”
