The New York City Police Department cannot immediately fire dozens of rookie officers, including some with criminal records, who were allegedly hired illegally by the department, a New York Supreme Court judge ruled. The NYPD said an internal investigation found the 31 officers lied about their backgrounds on applications and should be relieved of their duties, but the judge’s ruling means the department must wait until next week to take action.
